Whether your living room is a 21 foot length with a large picture window at one end or you live in a tiny apartment and the living room is bijou to say the least, there are living room décor ideas to suit you and your budget. You can go for cozy chic and warm up your living space or go for open-plan with vaulted ceilings and an expanse of herringbone hardwood floor. At the end of your project you will have ended up with a space that you can live in comfortably, decorated according to the space you have available. Are you aiming for a peaceful retreat, full of serenity and harmony or a more user-friendly, basic living space where you feel comfortable slipping your shoes off and putting your feet up.

If I was choosing a color scheme for my living room I would go to the cooler colors on my color wheel chart - the blues and greens which can be used in different shades to achieve a 'joined-up' look of cool elegance. I always make sure that, when I paint my ceiling, I use a light shade of the room's main color on my ceiling so, if my color scheme was blue, I would use the lightest eggshell blue I could find for my ceiling and then a slightly deeper shade of blue for my walls. If you have mouldings you could paint those completely white, or go for a darker shade of blue to both the walls and the ceiling. I would use matt paint on my walls and a paint with some kind of sheen on the mouldings.

For windows, to add height, place the curtain pole as high as possible near to the ceiling. This will give your curtains plenty of drop to achieve an elegant drape. Modern décor arrangements always suggest that the fabric should be allowed to pool on the floor - never in my house. To me, artistic though it evidently is, this 'pooling' idea for the fabric is just a dust collector and, if you have dogs like I do, is just asking them to make a bed out of the fabric! Why did I mention this? Find out what the trends are, but that does not mean you have to follow the trends slavishly. Adapt styles to suit you and your lifestyle.

You would think, wouldn't you, that a large picture placed on the wall in a small room would be overpowering. Surprisingly, it isn't. I have the tiniest lounge you can imagine and, on the wall above the fireplace I have a really large picture of the Defence of Rourke's Drift, depicting the British soldiers of 'B' Company, South Wales Borderers.

While many teen girls enjoy vibrant, warm colors in their rooms, there are others who prefer cooler and more subtle hues.

Colors such as gray, soft blues and greens, and muted purples all work well together to create a very relaxing and elegant space.

Gray is a wonderful modern wall color, but if you find it to be somewhat drab, you can always add pops of more vivid colors such as red, orange and yellow -- just to add a bit of energy and balance to your teen's bedroom.

IDS10. A good show

It's over and I'm tired. Why? Because I've been talking for 4 days straight! An exhausting task even for a self proclaimed chatmeister like myself. Tired aside I'm very happy with the wonderful response to my work and even happier that I sold some of it.
It's funny, at 6:00pm on Sunday night (shut down time) I was thinking that I wouldn't do the show again next year, then at 8:00pm (long drive home time) I was redesigning next years booth in my head?!!?!

I love this simple design of room their are a lot of design here. One of my dreams!

LAVENDER ZEBRA BEDDING

The purple zebra print sets are no longer to be found so will lavender zebra bedding work? From the number of comments that I've been getting from teen girls looking for the set of black and purple zebra bedding set that I posted awhile back (Zebra Bedding with a Twist) it would seem that lots of my visitors waited too long and may have lost out.

I actually located a few sets that drifted through auctions early last month but they are now long gone. Yeah, that's pretty bad news if you had your heart set on it but the good news is that there is a set of deep lavender zebra bedding that is very similar and most importantly available at the time of this post.

Don't blame Tween and Teenage Girl Bedding and Bedroom Decorating Ideas if you mess around and let this one get away from you!

In my home I have a lovely dining set given to me by Brad's mother.. I adore it.. However, the cream fabric does not love our two daughters. :)

It's shameful that I'm just showing this to you guys as I was introduced to Uppercase Living in October. Better late than never?

Vinyl wall decor is very popular now so I think the trick to avoiding "cliche" is to find new ways to use it -whether it be in/on an unusual place or make it extremely personalized. On Uppercase Living you can definitely find some new ideas when it comes to using wall decals.

Of the earth - nestled in to the site of a former quarry, Simon Winstanley Architects have created the perfect "viewmaster" in the Solway Firth, Scotland (National Scenic Area).

Overview
The design meets the client's brief for a contemporary, energy efficient home which fully embraces the view
and relates to the surrounding context and landscape. The light, airy first floor contrasting the solid lower level, minimising the visual impact of the house, nestling it into the site. Open plan, the predominantly glazed top floor, provides two living rooms and a wonderful central entertaining kitchen dining area. Quite how the guests will tear their eyes from the view is another issue all together.

Location
The site is a steeply sloping, former quarry in a National Scenic Area which slopes steeply in two directions from the quarry base which forms the only level ground access.
The house is conceived as a stone plinth which echos the exposed quarry face and houses the bedrooms
with a garage & entrance under at the level of the quarry base.

Layout & Materials
The principal living accommodation is expressed as a lightweight glazed "pavilion" sitting on the solid plinth. It is set back to form an external terrace facing the sea and to reduce the apparent mass of the house.
The glazed pavilion is constructed with a steel frame and highly insulated timber infill panels clad in cedar and triple glazed windows. The roof, although thick internally to provide very high levels of insulation, is cantilevered on all sides with projecting expressed douglas fir rafters to give a thin, elegant leading edge.
The roof is finished in standing seam pre-fabricated grey zinc. The masonry base is finished in stone from re-cycled quarry waste.

The design uses the most energy efficient construction & technology where possible as part of a sustainable approach to building for the future:

the external walls, floor and roof are insulated to a high standard and air infiltration is minimised.
triple glazed windows with warm edge spacer bars, thermally broken frames and inert gas filled to achieve a whole window u-value of 0.7W/m2K.
heat pump using a borehole as the ground source for the underfloor heating and hot water system with a closed combustion wood burning stove as back up.
micro generation of renewable electricity using roof mounted Photovoltaic Panels.
whole house heat recovery ventilation system.

Awards
The project has recently received a string of awards - a prestigious Saltire Society Housing Design Award, one of only two awarded this year, a Design Commendation from the Glasgow Institute of Architects and a Chartered Institute of Building Commendation Award. The project was also shortlisted in the Roses Design Awards.

Of middle earth - Murray Cockburn has created a true hideaway. Kohara Lodge, of local schist stone and sedum roof, sits in quiet vigil above the Shotover river. Oh, and it's a holiday let.

Overview
Kohara Lodge has been built with environmental considerations in mind. The owners' main aim was to put the land back to the way it was once building had finished hence the design of the property incorporating the natural hillside, and re-planting the grounds with native New Zealand trees.

The architect's vision was to replicate the natural environment as much as possible. To this end natural schist stone from a local quarry was used and this was dry laid as much as possible and dry stacked. Recycled railway timbers have been used on the outside of the property and there is no paint anywhere on the exterior of the house.

The windows at Kohara Lodge all have Comfort glass to prevent glare and reflection, built in UV protection and double glazing for energy efficiency.

Location
The house was designed by architect Murray Cockburn from Queenstown. The main aim of the owners when building was to ensure the land could be put back the way it was once they had finished, for example the grounds are planted with all native trees.

Set into the hillside with a grass covered roof, the house is built of schist stone and natural wood beams. From the all main rooms there are magnificent views over the mighty Shotover River and Coronet Peak.

Features
The spacious open plan living and dining area features a stylish, contemporary fitted kitchen with a large rustic kitchen table, glass splash backs and over size ceiling lights.

An open fire and feature ceiling-height schist stone fireplace create the prefect environment to relax in the colder months, with comfortable leather armchairs and couches. In the summer, large floor to ceiling glass doors can be opened up to the terrace area, which enjoys an outside open fire and provides access to the lap pool.

4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (2 ensuite), open plan living, dining and kitchen area, lap pool and heated spa.

Travel Tuesday: Hotel Palazzina Grassi designed by Philippe Starck

Iconic French designer Philippe Starck's new Italian hotel project - The Palazzina Grassi - has opened and we've gotten a sneak peak into this palace of sparkling mirrors and glass. Located along the Grand Canal the building's shell dates to the 16th century, in which generations of noble and "haute-bourgeois" families lived. Mr. Starck has incorporated loads of murano glass chandis, Ventian mirrors and a few touches of Italian design icon Piero Fornasetti. This hotel is seriously romantic and sexy.

The goal of the hotel is to give its patrons the most Venetian experience it can. Check in happens on the 1960's Celli boat that brings you right to the private hotel dock. Check-in happens on the boat and there is not hotel "desk" in the lobby.

Breakfast can be served at any time of day and anywhere in the hotel. I'd truly never leave!

The whitewashed beamed ceilings ad a rustic counterpoint to the slick mirrors and Starck's signature aluminum furniture. The rooms range from a small 215 sq. ft. (approx. 15'x15') to a large 750 sq. ft.(approx. 35'x20'). Prices range from approximately $420 to $1,310. Not budget, but maybe for a splurge?

The masks are a signature design element in the hotel - very Carnevale de Venizia.

Note the spectacular Venetian mirrors mounted on the glass walls, or perhaps they are mirrored walls? It's hard to tell!

The hotel restaurant is filled with spectacular Murano glass chandeliers and artworks by Aristide Najean.

Doesn't this chandi look like a mass of seaweed and coral? The fish bone rug adds a touch of whimsy and humor.

Can you just imagine sinking into these lush sofas and the dark and romantic atmosphere, sipping a little grappa?

The hallways are lit in different dark and gorgeous colors.

Boo.

I've never been to Venice, have you? This one is on my list!

Lucky 7 Lampwerks

Paul Cuthbert of Lucky 7 Lampwerks combines edison bulbs and industrial detritus to form lighting that is also art.

He says:

If you go into the engine room of a ship or the boiler room of a building, there is a beauty in the placement of common instruments. It lies in their relationship to the machinery around them. My objective was to bring to life a slice of a forbidden place... the restricted areas.

This last one reminds me of my father-the-mechanic's shop. Not a restricted area for me -- but the combination of heavy metal forms and thick orange extension cords, combined with the feel of dirt and dark in the photography pushes nostalgia buttons for me.

Here are some of the faucet that I like for my bath tab, hope this 2010 would bring more luck to me, so that I would be able to buy one of those and place it to my bath tab.

Tips, Tricks and Hints for Cooking, Baking and Storing Food

These simple but creative tips will make things easier in the kitchen - and you can even impress your friends with them.

1. Get rid of freezer taste

No matter how clean you keep your freezer, foods tend to pick up a nasty "freezer taste" after a while. To get rid of it, give your frozen goodies a quick rinse under running water to wash out the ice.

2. Turn your faucet into a "metal soap"

Metal soaps are made out of stainless steel and used to remove unpleasant smells like garlic and fish from hands, for which they work very well. Not many people realize that if they have a kitchen faucet made out of stainless steel, it can be used for the same purpose! Rub your hands on the faucet to deodorize them quickly and effectively.

3. Use baking soda to remove tea and coffee stains

Tea and coffee tend to leave nasty stains on porcelain cups and mugs. Often even thorough washing doesn't get rid of them. There is, however, an easy fix: sprinkle a little baking soda in the cups and wash. The stains will come out like magic!

4. Use a sieve as a steamer

If you don't have a steaming basket, you can use a stainless steel sieve instead. Just place it on top of your kettle, add the food to be steamed inside and top with the lid. Do not use a plastic sieve, as it can melt.

5. Chop onion without crying

There are numerous tips for cutting onion without tears, some of them strange enough to resemble black magic. One easy trick that actually works is to put the onion in the freezer for a while before chopping it.

6. Stop bleeding with a teabag

If you happen to cut yourself while in the kitchen, help is near. Moisten a teabag with a little water (or use a used teabag) and press it on the cut. Tea contains substances that help stop the bleeding very quickly (as well as antiseptic ingredients) and the bag is easy to wrap around a finger.

7. Make smooth ice cream without an ice cream maker

That's right. You can use any sorbet, sherbet or ice cream recipe and freeze it normally in a freezer. The result will most likely be a solid block of ice, but let it thaw for 15-30 minutes and run it through a blender or a food processor for delicious smooth ice cream. Serve immediately.

8. Make your own confectioner's sugar

Ran out of confectioner's sugar? If you have a blender or a food processor, you can make your own from normal sugar by pulsing it until it is powderized.

9. Keep herbs fresh for longer

Many people store fresh herbs either in the fridge or in a glass of water. For even better results, put the herbs in a glass of water inside the fridge. The water should be changed once a week. This way herbs like parsley keep fresh for up to several weeks.

10. Use frozen fruit as ice cubes

Normal ice cubes have the annoying problem of diluting your drink when they melt. Avoid this by using frozen fruit or berries as ice cubes. Afterwards enjoy them as a healthy sweet treat!

When creating a design for your living room, keep in mind how the living room will be used. A living room with surround sound, for example, will require a particular design in order to get the full effect of that sound. Whether there is surround sound or no sound, a living room should be a room that creates a relaxing atmosphere in which one can read quietly, visit with friends, or any number of things in a comfortable manner.

Consideration of furniture is important. A casual living room will not have stiff furniture that provides no comfort when sitting. That type of furniture should be reserved for waiting rooms at a doctor's office or school rooms. A comfortable living room's couches and chairs will be made out of soft, perhaps plush fabrics that invite a person to relax on them. Their comfort will be further enhanced by soft, plush pillows of the same fabric. Some will even add pillows that contrast with the colors of the couches or chairs. This furniture is something that can be relaxed and socialized on in complete comfort.

Flooring is another important consideration for this room. Hardwood floors are very popular right now, yet they do not have to be the only choice. Hardwood is pretty and easy to clean, yet it's cold. If your home is often cold and you're looking for economical ways to keep it warmer, carpeting is one way to do that. Carpeting will hold the heat in the room better than hardwood flooring which will make the room warmer longer. This will in turn use your furnace less and your money will be saved. However, if you have allergies to dust or other airborne particles, carpeting may not be a good choice. No matter how often you vacuum, it can be very difficult to get those allergens out of the air. For this type of person, a hardwood floor would probably be the better choice because there will be less fibers in the room to hold in those allergens.

Television and sound system would also be a consideration into your design. If your television is large, it will take a large portion of area in the living room. Alternately, if it is small it won't take up as much room. Either way, the seating and sound should be surrounding the viewing area at a reasonable distance for both sight and sound. If you have surround sound, you have the advantage of bringing the sound to the seating area. Otherwise, the seating should surround the television at a distance that makes listening happen easily.

Living rooms should be places of comfort. They should be conducive to visiting and mingling with guests as well as watching television. With the listed tips above, your living room will bring comfort and joy to all of its inhabitants.

I had a pleasure of attending the West Coast Interiors trade show recently. I love attending seminars, and I am absolutely fascinated by design trends. Here's what I learned at the show, and what you'll be seeing a lot of during the next couple of years. If you like to shop and peruse catalogs and magazines, you may have seen some of this already.

For home decor, you will see:

Adventurous design and craft: layering of fabrics, textures, accessories; bold and graphic patterns, and lots of pattern mixing. (Did you know that wallpaper is back in fashion? Patterns are very bold and large, and would be gorgeous in a room where you really want to make a statement.)
Nature-inspired design: "green" products, colors of sand, sea, sky, trees; natural materials like stone, wood, glass; animal prints
Bohemian style: edgy, funky, ethnic mix; handcrafted originals; lots of color and pattern
Dramatic style: lots of black and white, mirrors, crystal, shimmer, metallics. Look for unexpected combinations such as leather combined with crystal.
Vintage/Nostalgic style: 1940's looks; Hollywood style; pieces with a history

If it sounds like "anything goes," you are partly right-- it is definitely OK to mix woods, colors, patterns, styles, but it should look deliberate and purposeful. Take care to avoid a haphazard, random look.
